Dear Friend,
Called to the Campus
When Carolyn and I think about the city of Detroit, we think about the future, a future that can be bright and fulfilling, a future that can be full of hope and a fresh start. This future has to start with a core group of individuals who see Detroit as “half full” and not “half empty”—people who desire to see change. We believe those individuals are at Wayne State University (WSU). WSU sits in the heart of Detroit, and God has called Carolyn and me to campus ministry there.
How God Called and Continually Prepares
Carolyn has been connected to college campuses since 1986. While we were in Cleveland, she worked for Cuyahoga Community College and assisted inner-city high school students, preparing them for college. While at Oakland University, she supervised sophomore and junior college students that assisted high school students getting ready for college: it was our desire to make their next step count. For us, college includes more than putting knowledge in students’ minds—it includes putting love for Christ in their hearts. If students plant love, respect, and a relationship with God in their hearts, then the education they receive will plant seeds of great leadership down the road. College students are at a unique place in life. They are away from family for the first time and making decisions that will affect their entire life. Our responsibility will be to meet, build friendships, and mentor students, showing them how to walk with Jesus and impact their community and world for the rest of their lives.
The Hope and Vision
We have been invited by The Navigators, an international, interdenominational Christian ministry, to begin a collegiate ministry at Wayne State University. We wanted to share our new adventure with you. Stay tuned as we will be sending you more details soon—including information on the prayer and financial support team we need to have in place before we begin our ministry.
